Position Description

Position Summary

The residence director is a live-in, professional employee whose responsibilities include recruitment, selection, training, supervision and evaluation of 6 – 9 undergraduate student staff members, administration of up to 370 residents in a residence hall or apartment building, serving as an active member of the Residence Life team, implementation of assessment programs to assure excellence in achieving student learning outcomes, educational effectiveness, and service.

Education Required

Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling or related field preferred.

1 year of post undergraduate residence life experience.

Primary Duties

1. Supervision and development of para-professional Residence Life Staff through meetings, individual sessions, and leadership of staff initiatives.
2. Administration of residence hall(s) and apartment building including housing paperwork, student disciplinary hearings and related paperwork, and communication with maintenance staff.
3. Plan and implement programming to meet student affairs learning outcomes and Messiah’s college wide educational objectives
4. Plan and implement initiatives that meet first year or upper class experience learning outcomes.
5. Communicate, promote, and hold students accountable to Messiah College community standards.
6. Track and respond to tasks related to student care, engagement in student conduct, persistence, and retention in the student care community.
7. Serve on the On-Call Response rotation of Residence Life personnel and work in cooperation with Safety, the Counseling staff and the Nurse on call.
8. Respond as required/requested to student crisis.
9. Implement and perform assessment of programs and staff to ensure excellent service, educational effectiveness and progress on student learning outcomes.
10. Assist Director of Residence Life with recruitment and selection of student staff.
11. Make intentional efforts to get to know your residents.
12. Partner with faculty in supporting struggling students who receive academic alerts and tracking their progress.
13. Partner with retention in meeting with and supporting at-risk students, directing them to important campus resources and tracking their progress.
14. Identify 5 office hours a week and publish these hours.
15. Maintain consistent and reliable attendance.

Secondary Duties

1. Participation in various committees through membership in the Community of Educators.
2. Academic advising of undeclared students.
3. Other duties as assigned.
